In May 1998, Fiat had a strong position in Italy thanks to a wide lineup that included 11 different models (two of which were sports cars) and 113 different versions. Its competitor Volkswagen offered just 5 models. Six years later the German maker had 11 models available, or one more than Fiat. This trend continued over the years up to the point that as of May 2026, Volkswagen offered 17 different models and 245 versions while Fiat offered just 10 models (Qubo and Doblo are rebadges, and Ulysse and 600 are counted twice due to their electric versions). The data comes from Quattroruote Professional that tracks the Italian market since 1986. You can check it out here: https://www.quattroruotepro.it/osservatorio-qp/
