❗️BMW’s M badge has evolved from the mid-engine M1 supercar into one of the most recognizable performance families in automotive history. It started with the M1 in 1978, BMW Motorsport’s first ground-up production car, built around a 277-hp inline-six and produced through 1981. The M5 followed in the mid-1980s and helped establish the formula of combining genuine sports-car performance with a practical luxury sedan, while the E30 M3 arrived in 1986 and became one of BMW M’s defining motorsport-bred icons. The M6 lineage traces back to the 1984 M635CSi, disappeared and returned more than once, and eventually concluded with the third-generation M6 in 2018. BMW split the M3 coupe into its own M4 nameplate in 2014, while the smaller M2 joined the lineup in 2016 and quickly became one of the brand’s most enthusiast-focused modern cars.
