😳 Fernando Alonso has blasted modern F1 overtaking, arguing that the 2026 cars can let drivers pass without the braking battles, risk-taking, or wheel-to-wheel skill fans traditionally associate with Formula 1. After the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Alonso pointed to cars overtaking in the middle of straights simply because they had more electrical energy available, saying, “You just press one button, and you overtake.” The controversy stems from F1’s radically more powerful hybrid system, with the MGU-K jumping from roughly 120 kW to a massive 350 kW for 2026. When a chasing driver qualifies for Overtake Mode, they can also receive up to an additional 0.5 MJ of energy while the car ahead’s electrical deployment begins tapering at very high speeds. That difference has helped create what drivers and engineers have dubbed “yo-yo” racing, where one car can suddenly surge past another depending on how much battery energy each has available. Silverstone exposed the effect particularly clearly, with repeated
