🚗 Cars once drove directly beneath this massive granite boulder on the Generals Highway in California’s Sequoia National Park. ⠀ Tunnel Rock became part of the park’s automotive history when the roadway was routed beneath the formation, with National Park Service archives documenting vehicles using the passage as far back as the 1930s. ⠀ The opening was essentially incorporated into the road itself, creating one of the strangest-looking stretches of highway you could encounter behind the wheel. ⠀ As the Generals Highway evolved, traffic was eventually rerouted around Tunnel Rock, leaving the old section beneath the boulder behind. ⠀ Today, cars no longer pass underneath it, but visitors can walk along the preserved old roadway and stand beneath the same enormous slab of granite motorists once drove under. ⠀ The modern highway now runs alongside the formation, making old-versus-new photos of the location especially dramatic. ⠀ Would you have trusted driving your car underneath Tunnel Rock? ⠀ ⠀
