Ten years ago, the new cars available in Europe were powered mainly by petrol or diesel engines. According to the data from QuattroruoteProfessional, in a market like Italy, the consumers had to choose among 55 brands and 364 models. Back then, the dieselgate scandal of late 2015 had just started to hit its sales. In fact, five years later, only 1 in four of the new cars available to buy had a diesel engine, even if the market was bigger in terms of models and brands. Today, the take off of electrified models and the strict emissions regulation have had two big effects. On one side, the diesel new cars are quite difficult to find. On the other one, as the supply gets bigger following the arrival of new Chinese brands, the EV choice is wider than ever. As of September 2026, the consumers in Italy had more choices among PHEV models than among diesel ones. By the end of next year, the total number of electric models should outpace the total number of gasoline models.
