An illustrative chart to show how serious the demand problem is in China right now. According to the retail sales data taken from my friend Matt Gasnier's BestSellingCarsBlog.com, the volume dropped by 21% between January and August 2026 to "just" 11.31 million units. This total was almost 3 million units below the one registered between January and August 2025. My chart shows the top 10 best-selling brands through August 2026 and how their sales changed compared to 2025. BYD took the worst part of the drop with its sales down by 41% to 1.16 million units, or almost 800,000 units less. It was one of the five brands in the top 10 that underperformed the total market's drop, meaning that they all lost market share: Geely, Chery, Volkswagen, and Wuling. BMW, Audi, Toyota, and Tesla also posted double-digit decreases but gained market share. Leapmotor was not only the exception but a big star, as its sales increased by 47%. That's quite remarkable in a collapsing market where the price war is making it more
