In the early 2000s, VW chairman Ferdinand Piëch made a bet that almost destroyed the brand — build a luxury car so good it could embarrass a Bentley, then sell it with a VW badge. Engineers called the project impossible. Piëch gave them 22 strict personal requirements and told them to figure it out. What they built was one of the most overengineered production cars in automotive history — and almost nobody bought it. Mercedes took their already-nuclear SL65 AMG, handed it to the Black Series team, and told them to remove every ounce of comfort in the name of pure performance. The result was a $350,000 open-top weapon with a twin-turbocharged V12 that produced a number so absurd, AMG had to electronically limit the torque — because no production gearbox on earth could survive the full output. Only 350 were ever built.
