🇨🇳🚨 China is moving to force physical controls back into new cars, targeting the touchscreen-only trend that has taken over modern interiors. The proposed mandatory revision to China’s GB 4094 vehicle-control standard is currently awaiting approval and lists a planned implementation date of July 1, 2027. Under the proposal, 19 important vehicle functions would need dedicated physical controls instead of being accessible exclusively through a touchscreen. That includes turn signals, hazard lights, the horn, P/R/N/D gear selection, windshield wipers, defrosting, windows, headlights, emergency calling and activation of combined driver-assistance systems. The controls would also need to be fixed in position and designed so drivers can identify them by touch, with tactile or audible feedback when operated. China is not banning touchscreens themselves, so infotainment, navigation and other secondary features can still remain screen-based.
