Lotus built a mid-engine sports car around a Toyota RAV4 engine — then supercharged it until it made 400 horsepower. The Evora skipped the expense of developing its own V6, bought Toyota’s 3.5-liter instead, and wrapped it in Lotus’s own intake, exhaust and engine management. The result weighed barely 3,100 pounds and pulled 0.98 g on the skidpad. Just 6,117 were built in twelve years. Ariel took the turbocharged engine from the Honda Civic Type R, bolted it to a bare tubular frame with no roof and no doors, and somehow made it road legal. The Atom 4 weighs 595 kg, runs three power modes up to 320 horsepower, and Ariel claims 0–60 in 2.8 seconds — Autocar measured 3.1. Even the chassis is 15 percent stiffer than the Atom 3’s, and almost nothing carried over from the old car.
